Financing climate protection investments of private enterprises
In view of the changing climate, it is becoming increasingly important that more use is made of renewables and businesses practise energy efficiency. That is why in recent years DEG has made a point of cofinancing investment projects of private companies which help to protect the climate. Within the last two year, DEG therefore provided finance with an overall volume of more than EUR 400 million.
In 2010, DEG and the French development finance institution Proparco provided a long-term loan to Bhoruka Power Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) for the construction of a wind farm in India. The corporation has developed water and wind power plants since 1992. The new facility in the Karnataka region has a capacity of approximately 26 MW in total. The wind farm improves the supply of electricity to a key economic area where demand has up to now considerably outstripped supply. BPCL also excels in displaying social responsibility. The corporation puts roughly five per cent of its annual profits into social projects, and it funds, e.g. schools for women and clinics in rural areas.
Give access to modern telecommunications
For years, DEG has been committed to ensuring that as many people as possible have access to information and modern communications. To date, it provided more than EUR 400 million for telecommunication investments of private companies. In 2010, together with other international finance institutions, DEG provided, e.g. O3b Networks with long-term finance to set up a satellite system to supply fast broadband Internet connections in developing countries. A tranche of finance with a volume of approx. USD 260 million has been committed, of which DEG contributed the equivalent of USD 28 million. The plan is for the satellites to link a large number of developing countries into the global network and provide remote regions in particular with affordable communications services.
