On virtually every continent, the game is one of the most popular sports, with enthusiastic fans from all age groups and strata of the population, with great emotions and stories. In 2010, the World Cup is celebrated for the first time in Africa: From 11 June onwards, South Africa will host the tournament with participating teams from 32 countries. DEG has been represented in the country with an office since 1994. The staff in Johannesburg has great hopes connected with the World Cup for their country.

Promoting Climate Protection
Investmens that promote climate protection, use renewable energy and ensure energy-efficient production: an especially relevant subject allover the world, given the huge increase in energy needs and the threat to the environment. In 2008 and 2009 alone, DEG has provided EUR 260 million for, among others, hydro-electric and wind power plants in Africa, Asia and Latin America. DEG plans to expand its involvement in climate protection even further in the upcoming years.

Accompanying German enterprises
Foreign direct investments are important for German enterprises focusing on new markets in developing and emerging countries. For almost 50 years, one of DEG's main tasks has been to support German companies carrying out their business abroad. For financing their investments in developing countires, DEG contributed a volume of EUR 300 million within the two last financial years. DEG offers German companies the support of investment managers with long-term experience in these countries and this special field of business.

Agribusiness, forestry and food industry
Agribusiness plays a major role in the economy of developing countries. For decades DEG has been committed to agribusiness. It therefore knows about the specifics which need to be considered in the financing of investments in this sector. DEG finances and advises local companies in developing countries who wish to cultivate and process agricultural products for the domestic and foreign market and German and international companies who are represented in developing countries or wish to extend their presence there.
